An introduction to the state of Tasmania
Tasmania or as it’s more lovingly called “Tassie” is Australia’s only island state located some 240km south of the mainland. Tasmania actually consists of 334 islands with the main island being the 26th largest island in the world.
Tasmania is home to a little more than 500,000 people with around half of those living in the states capital Hobart. Hobart is a beautiful harbour city nestled amongst lush mountains and is famous for its food, arts and scenery. Hobart was ranked 7th in Lonely Planets “Best in Travel 2013” book so needless to say it’s a popular destination for any Tasmanian adventure.
Hobart and Tasmania in general have a rich history and this is evident in the architecture and artefacts across the state. In fact Hobart was originally established as a penal colony in 1804. A great way to explore Tassie is by rental car and their are some amazing road trips to be experienced.
If your starting in Hobart then a great drive with plenty to see is to head up the East Coast of Tasmania. There’s a lot to see all within a relatively short distance. We recommend stopping at Swansea, Bicheno, St Helens and the Bay of Fires. The drive up the East Coast is incredibly scenic, rugged and makes for a great little road trip.
If your going to visit Launceston on your Tasmanian adventure then you could easily drive from Hobart. It’s only 2 hour drive and the quaint town of Oatlands makes for a great halfway stop-off.
From Launceston you have access to one of the most popular road trips in Tasmania. Take the 2 hour drive to Cradle Mountain. If you’re into hiking then this is definitely the place for you. Cradle Mountain has stunning natural beauty and is not to be missed if you’re looking to explore the rugged beauty of Tasmania.
Tassie is perfect for exploring by car and we have what you need if your looking to hire a car for your holiday.
